The Purpose of Christians

Ever wonder what the purpose of being a Christian is? This post is for you.

Even Christians can lose sight of what they believe in. It's good to constantly remind ourselves of what our purpose on this earth is. Whether God has revealed to us our individual calling or not, we are all called to something greater.

Personally, I like things very direct and clear. Below is the who, what, when, where, how and why of the Christian purpose. This isn't meant to be exhaustive, and it surely doesn't cover everything about Christianity. It does give us a good basis to go off of, though. Since my heart's desire is to travel, you'll find that's what the Lord geared it towards. But you don't have to be a cross-country missionary to accomplish what God commands.

"He [Jesus] answered, I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel" (Matthew 15:24)

One point I want to make is that, as a Christian, we should be on a mission to save nonbelievers. We all know someone who doesn't believe in Christ, so we don't have to travel around the world to find them. And most of them, if not all, are going to be outside the walls of your church.

So you know who you're looking for, but now what...

1. What is our purpose?

"And great crowds came to Him [Jesus], bringing with them the lame, the blind, the crippled, the mute, and many others, and they put them at His feet, and He healed them" (Matthew 15:30)

Our purpose is to heal. Jesus doesn't deny healing to people. He genuinely wants to heal everyone. The area of life that needs healing is different for each person, though. Some need healing from physical hindrances. Some from mental disabilities. Some from the past hurt of others.

2. Why is this our purpose?

"So it is not the will of my Father who is in heaven that one of these little ones should perish" (Matthew 18:14)

The Father God wants to save every single one of us from destruction. If this does happen, it's not in His will.

3. How do we do our purpose?

"Then Jesus told his disciples, If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me" (Matthew 16:24)

The only way to do your purpose right is to remain in the will of God and keep a consistent relationship with Him. In order to do this, you need to deny your fleshly desires to sin and be selfish daily.

4. Who will finish our purpose?

"When the disciples heard this, they fell on their faces and were terrified. But Jesus came and touched them, saying, Rise, and have no fear" (Matthew 17:6-7)

We are the only ones who can live out our purpose. Through your personal relationship with Jesus, the Lord will touch you and allow you to do what you cannot do with your own flesh. You may be terrified, but the Lord commands you to have no fear.

Also: Matthew 22:14 and Matthew 9:13

5. When should we start our purpose?

"The disciples went and did as Jesus had directed them" (Matthew 21:6)

When the Lord leads you to start. If you work ahead of God, you'll fail each time. If you try and catch up late, you'll miss Him the whole way. There's healing for you that needs to come first, before you can heal anyone else, and that in itself is a process. After that comes preparation for our purpose. If we trust God's perfect timing, then we won't have to force our way through. This will all flow naturally.

6. Where is our purpose located?

"Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit" (Matthew 28:19)

God works anywhere and everywhere. Your purpose doesn't have to be located in a special place. It doesn't need to be on front stage with a microphone. Let God place your in your purpose, and where He does will be more than enough.
